Back to Basics in Black and White (3)

In the last post, we saw the local band Mama Tried performing in a small nightclub. An on-camera strobe made color photos possible at low ISO. Without the strobe, the ISO maxed out at 12,800, and the colored stage lights were a nightmare for the white balance. As promised, here are the ambient light photos in black and white, where we eliminate the effect of bad white balance. The photos were made in the range of f/2.0 - f/4.0, with shutter speeds of 1/50 - 1/100, and ISO 6400 - 12800. In this scenario, the stage lights controlled the image - something you have to realize while working if you want to convert to black and white, and something I didn't think about while making these photos.

Gear Photos were made with a Nikon D750 paired with either a Zeiss Milvus 35 mm f/2.0, or a Nikon 85 mm f/2 AI-s lens.
